Tablescape Thursday I love Dishes! How I store them

I have always loved plates!  When I moved into this house I made a decision to use one of the closets as a dish pantry.  As I am trying to organize my house again after the holidays I thought I would share how I use this closet - turned dish pantry.
The door in it leads into the hall to my master bedroom.  There is a closet on either side of the hallway.  I chose to keep one closet for clothes and use this one for storage of kitchen items.  I just used the existing shelves and re-purposed them.

On one half of this side of the closet I have used the existing shelves for stacks of  plates.
I try to keep like dishes together...All good china, Christmas,Thanksgiving etc.
(These shelves were meant for shoes but work great for plates)

Below these plates I keep baskets, and silverware in their wooden containers.
On the very top shelf (out of the picture) I have
footed cake plates, trifle bowls and other tall items.

On the other half I keep large bowls on top, more cake plates
On the next shelf and below them, pitchers.

Below that is for platters and serving dishes.
On the bottom shelf are tall stacks of plates and chargers
that would not fit on the other side because there were too tall.

On the floor are my crock pots and seasonal boxed plates.
(Valentines, birthday etc.)

On the other side of the closet are my stacked washer and dryer
and above them are trays and narrow items.
I did have some of the dividing boards made and put in this area for the trays.

Next to the washer/dryer is a section that I use for
tablecloths, napkins  placemats and soft goods.

Below the tablecloths are vases and flower containers.
On the floor are baskets of cleaning cloths.
This room works for me because I have a small kitchen
with very little storage.  Because it contains the washer and dryer,
it is an all-purpose room.  I had another door built across from the first one
which leads out  into my family room and makes accessing this room from the kitchen more convenient.

On the back of both doors I keep my aprons
I love to be able to find just the right dishes and tableware when I need it.
If you are a dish lover, where do you store your dishes?

  3. Oh to have that space. I'm embarrassed to say I have some of my dishes in the shed...they are nicely stacked on shelves like you have but it is still a shed after all.

  4. Right now...everywhere. I didn't even realize it until I started tablescaping. I have things I've long forgotten about. I'm in the process of doing some shifting of furniture, painting etc. I'm eventually going to use an extra bedroom in the basement as a dish room. I can't wait!

Yours is perfect. With the washer and dryer in there, don't things get really dusty. I have a few shelves in my laundry room where I keep larger soup pots etc. I find they get so much dust on them from doing laundry in there.

  6. The washer and dryer are vented outside and I haven't noticed any more dust than normal there. Thanks for asking though.

  11. How wonderful that you have such a big closet space to devote to your passion! Its great that you can keep everything table-related in one spot. My hubby built me a dish pantry in a bedroom closet but I have to keep table linens and vases in other closets so everything is not in one place. Thanks for sharing!

  13. I just came back to tell you that I believe the fabric I got for my slipcover is a canvas, that I got from fabric.com, but I'd have to check the invoice to be certain.

  15. I am green with envy over your dish closet...you are so lucky! I ♥♥♥ it. Living in an old, and I mean old house, closets are few and far between! I had my husband reinforce the inside of an unused tv armoire, put a sturdy shelf in, and that is what I use for several of my dishes...but it has reached capacity...now what to do!

  24. You certainly have a lot of dishes and I love that they are in different colors. You are fortunate to have the space to do that with the closet.

I love shelves, drawers and closets. If I was buying a house now, that would be my priority.
